The most coveted piece of real estate for dining out has to be the roof deck, especially during the summer months. However, the pretention and high prices that are normally associated with roof deck restaurants often take away from the stunning views and breezy al fresco meals. The solution for this dilemma is Alma, a sophisticated yet relaxed Mexican restaurant in the Carroll Gardens section of Brooklyn . Not only does the restaurant have a stunning roof deck overlooking a spectacular view of Manhattan , but the handcrafted building boasts three floors and a welcoming bar that is a favorite among locals.
Not only does the food add to the atmosphere; it completely enhances the experience. The Mexican cuisine is traditional yet modern, and the ingredients are fresh and wildly flavorful. An appetizer not to be missed is the Tacos De Pescado (Fish Tacos). The dish comes with two crispy fish tacos served on warm tortillas with jalapeno marmalade, picked red onions and shaved red cabbage. Absolute heaven. As far as entrées, try the Poblano Relleno, a Poblano pepper stuffed with braised short rib beef and smoked Gouda cheese, which sits in a yellow mole sauce and topped with crispy yucca. However, the most stand out dish at Alma is the Huitlacoche Macaroni and Cheese. Huitlachoche, the fungus that grows on corn and has been dubbed “the Mexican truffle” has a unique and unmistaken smoky flavor that can awaken any palette. The richness of the huitlachoche and the creaminess of the macaroni and cheese are baked together in a small casserole dish and deliver an explosive flavor. Wash down your meal with the many Tequila choices or unique Margaritas. If you cannot get enough of Alma , brunch is available on the roof deck on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 2:30pm. Best of all, the fun does not stop after the summer. The roof deck is heated in the winter, which means year round views and scrumptious Mexican cuisine all year long.
